What’s the difference between psychotherapy, psychology, and psychiatry

Psychotherapy:
Psychotherapy focuses on talk-based support to help you better understand your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. It provides practical tools to cope with stress, anxiety, relationship challenges, trauma, life transitions and any other mental health challenge. Psychotherapy can be provided by Registered Psychotherapists, Psychologists, Social Workers, and Psychiatrists.

Psychology
Psychology focuses on assessment, diagnosis, and understanding mental health concerns in depth. Psychologists are trained to conduct psychological, psychoeducational assessments, and may also provide therapy. Their work often helps clarify what is going on and guide next steps for treatment or support.

Psychiatry:
Psychiatry is a medical specialty focused on diagnosing mental health conditions and managing medication when appropriate. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can also provide talk therapy, often alongside medical care, and work collaboratively with therapists and psychologists as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Note: At BeWell, our Psychiatrists do not conduct psychological assessments but rather support our clients through medication management.
