Understanding Your
Child's Learning Profile
Every child learns differently. Some children may work hard but continue to struggle with reading, writing, math, attention, memory, or completing schoolwork. Others may demonstrate strong abilities in some areas while experiencing unexpected difficulties in others. These differences can sometimes make it difficult for parents and teachers to understand why a child is struggling or what type of support they need.
A Bright BeWellers Psychoeducational Assessment provides a comprehensive look at your child's cognitive and academic profile. It can help identify areas of strength and difficulty and provide practical recommendations to support learning at school and at home.

With Our Team
Choosing the right assessment can feel overwhelming.
During your consultation, our team will review your concerns and gather information about your child's needs and symptoms to recommend the assessment that best meets their needs.
Understanding the
Assessment Tools We Use
As part of the assessment process, our clinicians may use standardized tools designed to gather information about how a child communicates, interacts, and experiences the world around them.
These tools are selected based on your child's age, developmental stage, and communication style.
WPPSI-IV/
WISC-V
Cognitive Assessment
Depending on your child's age, the WPPSI-IV or WISC-V may be used to understand their cognitive abilities and overall learning profile.
These assessments explore areas such as:
- Verbal comprehension
- Visual-spatial reasoning
- Fluid reasoning
- Working memory
- Processing speed
The results can help identify your child's cognitive strengths and areas of difficulty and provide insight into how they approach different types of learning and problem-solving tasks.
WIAT-4 Academic Achievement Assessment
The Wechsler Individual Achievement Test measures your child's academic skills and helps identify areas where they may be experiencing learning difficulties.
Depending on your child's needs, it can assess skills in:
- Reading
- Writing
- Mathematics
- Oral language
The results help clinicians understand your child's current academic abilities and identify areas where additional support or accommodations may be beneficial.
BASC-3 Behavioural & Emotional Functioning
The Behavior Assessment System for Children provides information about your child's behavioural, emotional, and adaptive functioning.
Parent and/or teacher questionnaires can help identify areas such as:
- Attention
- Anxiety
- Hyperactivity
- Emotional regulation
- Adaptability
- Social skills
- Behaviour
- Everyday functioning
This information helps provide a more complete picture of how your child is functioning at home, at school, and in other environments.
Vineland-3 Adaptive Functioning
The Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales looks at how your child's abilities translate into everyday life.
It provides information about areas such as:
- Communication
- Daily living skills
- Socialization
- Independence
- Adaptive functioning
This helps clinicians understand how your child manages everyday demands beyond what can be measured through cognitive and academic testing alone.

What is a Psychoeducational Assessment?
A psychoeducational assessment is a comprehensive evaluation designed to understand a child's cognitive abilities, academic skills, learning profile, and areas of difficulty.
At BeWell, the assessment may include cognitive testing, academic achievement testing, behavioural questionnaires, and assessments of memory and learning. The results can help families and educators better understand a child's strengths and challenges and identify appropriate supports.
What can a Psychoeducational Assessment identify?
A psychoeducational assessment may help identify or provide information about:
- Learning difficulties
- Academic challenges
- Cognitive strengths and weaknesses
- Attention and executive functioning
- Memory and learning
- Processing abilities
- Giftedness
- Behavioural and emotional factors affecting learning
A diagnosis may or may not be provided at the end of the assessment. The primary goal is to understand your child's learning profile and provide actionable recommendations.
Does a Psychoeducational Assessment provide a diagnosis?
A psychoeducational assessment may or may not result in a psychological diagnosis. Each child is unique, and diagnostic decisions are based on the integration of assessment results, clinical interviews, behavioural information, developmental history, and other relevant information.
Regardless of whether a diagnosis is given, families receive a comprehensive report outlining the findings, strengths, areas of need, and recommendations to support their child's learning and overall well-being.
Does my child need to attend the assessment?
Yes. Your child will participate in individual testing sessions with a member of the assessment team. Parents or guardians will also participate in the clinical interview and feedback session.
Live testing is completed one-on-one to support an unbiased assessment of your child's abilities and learning style.
Can the report help with school accommodations?
Yes, if they are clinically appropriate. One of the key purposes of a psychoeducational assessment is to provide information that can help families and educators make informed decisions about learning strategies, accommodations, and educational supports.
Are these assessments covered by insurance?
Many extended health benefit plans provide coverage for psychological assessment services. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to confirm your specific coverage. BeWell provides detailed receipts that can be submitted for reimbursement. Direct billing may be available or partially available for some policies.
What if I'm not sure whether an assessment is the right next step?
That's exactly what the complimentary consultation is for. Our team will answer your questions, learn more about your concerns, and help you determine whether an assessment is appropriate and which option best fits your child's needs.
