Understanding Your
Child's Unique
Development

Every child experiences the world differently. For some children, differences in communication, social interaction, sensory experiences, emotional regulation, or flexibility may lead families to seek a better understanding of their needs.

A Little BeWellers Assessment helps families explore whether their child's experiences align with characteristics commonly associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder and provides guidance on appropriate supports and next steps. Cognitive/academic testing is not indicated.

Understanding the Assessment Tools We Use

Smiling toddler playing during an assessment

As part of the assessment process, our clinicians may use standardized tools designed to gather information about how a child communicates, interacts, and experiences the world around them.

These tools are selected based on your child's age, developmental stage, and communication style.

ADOS-2

(Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition)

Typically used with children ages 3-13 years

The ADOS-2 is a structured, activity-based assessment that allows clinicians to observe how a child communicates, engages socially, responds to interactions, and approaches different situations.

Through guided activities and conversations, clinicians gather information about areas such as:

  • Social communication
  • Interaction style
  • Play and imagination
  • Emotional expression
  • Adaptability and flexibility

The goal is not to test a child's abilities, but to better understand their unique way of communicating and engaging with others.

Participate in a one-hour meeting with your psychologist to discuss your child's developmental history, current strengths and concerns, and your goals for the assessment.

Step 3: Assessment & Questionnaires (Week 2)

Your child will participate in approximately two hours of age-appropriate assessment activities. Parents and teachers (when applicable) will also complete standardized questionnaires to provide a comprehensive understanding of your child's functioning across settings.

Step 4: Report Preparation (Weeks 3–4)

Your psychologist will carefully review all assessment findings and prepare a comprehensive report outlining results, clinical impressions, and individualized recommendations.

Step 5: Feedback Appointment (Weeks 4–6)

Meet with your psychologist to review the results, discuss recommendations, ask questions, and explore next steps for support. For some younger children, preliminary feedback may be provided on the day of testing.

What is an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Assessment?

An ASD Assessment is a detailed evaluation designed to better understand an individual's strengths, challenges, communication style, social experiences, sensory needs, and patterns of behaviour to determine whether they meet the criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder.

At BeWell Clinics, our Little BeWellers Assessment approach looks beyond a diagnosis. We focus on understanding the whole child and providing meaningful recommendations that support everyday life, learning, and overall well-being.

Who can benefit from an Autism Assessment?

An Autism Assessment may be helpful for children, teens, and parents who may have questions about their child's development, social experiences, communication style, sensory needs, or daily functioning.

Some individuals pursue an assessment because they have noticed challenges with:

  • Social communication
  • Understanding social cues or expectations
  • Sensory sensitivities or differences
  • Emotional regulation and managing change
  • Feeling overwhelmed by certain environments
What assessment tools are used during the ASD Assessment?

Depending on the child's age and communication style, our clinicians may use tools such as the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition). This tool is used alongside clinical interviews, developmental history, observations, and other relevant information to support the assessment process.

Does an ASD Assessment provide a diagnosis?

An ASD Assessment is designed to help determine whether a child's developmental profile aligns with the characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Diagnostic decisions are based on the integration of multiple sources of information, including assessment results, developmental history, clinical observations, and interviews. At the end of the process, the result may or may not provide an ASD diagnosis. Whether or not a diagnosis is given, the report is designed to provide meaningful guidance and support to help you and your child better understand their needs and thrive.

Can BeWell support my child after an ASD Assessment?

Yes. An assessment is often the first step toward understanding your child's needs. BeWell Clinics offers a range of services that may support children and families following an assessment, including therapy, parent support, and other mental health services tailored to each individual's goals.

Contact us to learn more.

Does my child need a referral?

No. A physician referral is not required to book an assessment. Families can contact our team directly to schedule a complimentary consultation and discuss their concerns.

What happens during the assessment?

Your child's assessment may include a parent or self-interview, standardized assessment tools, questionnaires, clinical observations, and a feedback session. The specific process will depend on your child's unique needs and the type of assessment recommended.

What will I receive after the assessment?

You will receive a comprehensive written report outlining the assessment findings, your child's strengths, areas of need, and personalized recommendations for home, school, and ongoing support. Your psychologist will also meet with you during a dedicated feedback session to review the results, answer your questions, and discuss next steps.

Are these assessments covered by insurance?

Many extended health benefit plans provide coverage for psychological assessment services. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to confirm your specific coverage. BeWell provides detailed receipts that can be submitted for reimbursement. Direct billing may be available or partially available for some policies.

What happens if my child receives a diagnosis?

Our support continues beyond the assessment. Depending on your child's needs, we can provide access to therapy, parent support, medication management, and additional services to help your family understand the diagnosis and move forward with confidence.

My child is very young. Is it too early for an assessment?

Early assessment can help identify developmental differences and connect families with appropriate supports as soon as possible. For children between 2 and 7 years old, our psychologists will first complete a consultation to determine the most appropriate assessment approach based on your child's developmental stage, strengths, and presenting concerns.

What if I'm not sure whether an assessment is the right next step?

That's exactly what the complimentary consultation is for. Our team will answer your questions, learn more about your concerns, and help you determine whether an assessment is appropriate and which option best fits your child's needs.
