With Our Team
Choosing the right assessment can feel overwhelming.
During your consultation, our team will review your concerns and gather information about your child's needs and symptoms to recommend the assessment that best meets their needs.
Understanding the
Assessment Tools We Use
As part of the assessment process, our clinicians may use standardized tools designed to gather information about how a child communicates, interacts, and experiences the world around them.
These tools are selected based on your child's age, developmental stage, and communication style.
ADOS-2 Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition
A structured, interactive assessment that looks at social communication, social interaction, play, and behaviours associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The clinician observes how a child communicates, responds to others, and engages in age-appropriate activities.
WPPSI-IV/
WISC-V
Cognitive Assessment
Cognitive testing helps create a picture of how a child thinks, learns, and solves problems. Depending on the child's age, the WPPSI-IV or WISC-V may be used to explore areas such as verbal comprehension, visual-spatial reasoning, fluid reasoning, working memory, and processing speed. Results can highlight both strengths and areas where additional learning support may be helpful.
WIAT-4 Academic Achievement Assessment
The Wechsler Individual Achievement Test measures academic skills and helps identify areas where a child may be experiencing learning difficulties. Depending on the child's needs, it can assess skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and oral language. Results can help determine whether academic performance is consistent with the child's overall cognitive abilities.
BASC-3 Behavioural & Emotional Functioning
The Behavior Assessment System for Children provides information about a child's emotional, behavioural, and adaptive functioning. Parent and/or teacher questionnaires can help identify areas such as anxiety, attention, hyperactivity, social skills, emotional regulation, adaptability, and everyday functioning across different environments.
SRS-2 Social Communication & Interaction
The Social Responsiveness Scale looks at social functioning and behaviours commonly associated with autism. It provides information about areas such as social awareness, social communication, social motivation, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviours, helping clinicians understand how a child navigates social interactions at home, school, and in other settings.
Vineland-3 Adaptive Functioning
The Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales looks at how a child's skills translate into everyday life. It assesses areas such as communication, daily living skills, socialization, and motor skills, providing insight into a child's independence and ability to manage everyday demands.

Frequently
Asked Questions
What is an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Assessment?
A Comprehensive ASD Assessment is a detailed evaluation designed to better understand an individual's strengths, challenges, communication style, social experiences, sensory needs, and patterns of behaviour to determine whether they meet the criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder.
At BeWell Clinics, our Thriving BeWellers Assessment approach looks beyond a diagnosis. We focus on understanding the whole child and providing meaningful recommendations that support everyday life, school, learning, and overall well-being.
Who can benefit from an Autism Assessment?
An Autism Assessment may be helpful for children, teens, and parents who may have questions about their child's development, social experiences, communication style, sensory needs, or daily functioning.
Some individuals pursue an assessment because they have noticed challenges with:
- Social communication
- Understanding social cues or expectations
- Sensory sensitivities or differences
- Emotional regulation and managing change
- Feeling overwhelmed by certain environments
- Navigating school and academic challenges
Can an Autism Assessment also identify ADHD or other mental health concerns?
Autism can sometimes overlap with other neurodevelopmental or mental health experiences, including ADHD, anxiety, or learning differences.
During the assessment process, our clinicians consider the full picture of the child's strengths and challenges. If additional concerns are identified, we can discuss whether further assessment or supports may be beneficial.
What can I expect during the Thriving BeWellers Autism+ Psychoeducational Assessment?
This is our most comprehensive assessment and is typically completed within 8–12 weeks. It combines autism, cognitive, and academic testing to provide a complete picture of your child's development and learning needs.
Step 1: Intake & Booking
Meet with our Care Team to discuss your concerns, complete required consent forms, and schedule your assessment appointments. We'll help guide you through the process and answer any questions along the way.
Step 2: Clinical Interview (Week 1)
Your psychologist will meet with you to review your child's developmental, educational, and medical history. Parents and teachers will also complete standardized questionnaires.
For youth aged 16-17, consent must be obtained directly for participation in the assessment process. Your child will participate in the clinical interview independently. Parent interviews may be scheduled at the discretion of your psychologist when deemed appropriate.
Step 3: Assessment Sessions (Weeks 2–3)
Your child will complete approximately 6–7 hours of testing, typically divided across two appointments.
Step 4: Report Preparation (Weeks 4–10)
Your psychologist will carefully review all assessment findings and prepare a comprehensive report outlining results, clinical impressions, and individualized recommendations.
Step 5: Feedback Appointment (Weeks 8–12)
Meet with your psychologist to review the results, discuss recommendations for home and school, and create a plan for ongoing support.
What concerns can these assessments help evaluate?
Our comprehensive assessment programs are designed to help families better understand their child's strengths, challenges, and developmental needs. Assessments may help evaluate concerns related to:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Learning disabilities and academic skill development
- Academic challenges and barriers to school success
- Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and attention-related concerns
- Cognitive functioning and learning profile
- Attention, executive functioning, and self-regulation skills
- Speech and language development concerns
- Social communication, developmental differences, and adaptive functioning
Does my child need a referral?
No. A physician referral is not required to book an assessment. Families can contact our team directly to schedule a complimentary consultation and discuss their concerns.
What happens during the assessment?
Your child's assessment may include a parent or self-interview, standardized assessment tools, questionnaires, clinical observations, and a feedback session. The specific process will depend on your child's unique needs and the type of assessment recommended.
What will I receive after the assessment?
You will receive a comprehensive written report outlining the assessment findings, your child's strengths, areas of need, and personalized recommendations for home, school, and ongoing support. Your psychologist will also meet with you during a dedicated feedback session to review the results, answer your questions, and discuss next steps.
Can the assessment be shared with my child's school?
Yes. Our reports are designed to support collaboration with schools, physicians, therapists, and other healthcare providers. Findings and recommendations may help guide educational planning, accommodations, and ongoing supports.
Are these assessments covered by insurance?
Many extended health benefit plans provide coverage for psychological assessment services. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to confirm your specific coverage. BeWell provides detailed receipts that can be submitted for reimbursement. Direct billing may be available or partially available for some policies.
My child already has ADHD (or another diagnosis). Can they still have an autism or psychoeducational assessment?
Yes. Many children have multiple areas of strength and challenge that may benefit from further exploration. During your consultation, our team will help determine whether an autism assessment, psychoeducational assessment, or combined assessment is the most appropriate option for your child.
What happens if my child receives a diagnosis?
Our support continues beyond the assessment. Depending on your child's needs, we can provide access to therapy, parent support, medication management, and additional services to help your family understand the diagnosis and move forward with confidence.
What if I'm not sure whether an assessment is the right next step?
That's exactly what the complimentary consultation is for. Our team will answer your questions, learn more about your concerns, and help you determine whether an assessment is appropriate and which option best fits your child's needs.
