With Our Team
Choosing the right assessment can feel overwhelming.
During your consultation, our team will review your concerns and gather information about your child's needs and symptoms to recommend the assessment that best meets their needs.
Understanding the
Assessment Tools We Use
As part of the assessment process, our clinicians may use standardized tools designed to gather information about how a child communicates, interacts, and experiences the world around them.
These tools are selected based on your child's age, developmental stage, and communication style.
ADOS-2 Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition
A structured, play- and interaction-based assessment that looks at social communication, interaction, and behaviours associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The clinician observes how a child communicates, responds to social cues, engages in play, and interacts during age-appropriate activities.
WPPSI-IV Cognitive Assessment
A cognitive assessment designed for young children that helps identify a child's learning and thinking profile. It may provide information about areas such as verbal comprehension, visual-spatial reasoning, fluid reasoning, working memory, and processing speed. Results can help identify both areas of strength and areas where a child may benefit from additional support.
CASL-2 Comprehensive Assessment of Spoken Language, Second Edition
A language assessment that examines how a child understands and uses spoken language.
Depending on the child's age and needs, relevant subtests may explore areas such as:
- Receptive Vocabulary: Understanding the meaning of words
- Expressive Vocabulary: Using words to communicate ideas
- Sentence Comprehension: Understanding increasingly complex sentences
- Pragmatic Language: Using language appropriately in social situations
- Nonliteral Language: Understanding language that goes beyond its literal meaning
- Inference: Understanding information that is implied rather than directly stated
This can be particularly helpful in understanding whether a child has difficulty with social communication or language processing, even when their overall vocabulary or speech appears strong.
Vineland-3 Adaptive Behaviour Assessment
Looks at how a child's skills translate into everyday life. It provides information about areas such as:
- Communication: How the child understands and communicates
- Daily Living Skills: Independence with everyday activities
- Socialization: How the child interacts and plays with others
- Motor Skills: Movement and coordination, when applicable
The Vineland helps identify how a child's abilities compare with what is typically expected for their age and where additional support may be beneficial.
SRS-2 Social Responsiveness Scale, Second Edition
A questionnaire that provides information about a child's social functioning and behaviours associated with autism. It looks at areas such as social awareness, social communication, social motivation, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviours. Information from parents and/or educators can help provide a picture of how a child functions across different environments.

Frequently
Asked Questions
What is an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Assessment?
A Comprehensive ASD Assessment is a detailed evaluation designed to better understand an individual's strengths, challenges, communication style, social experiences, sensory needs, and patterns of behaviour to determine whether they meet the criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder.
At BeWell Clinics, our Growing BeWellers Assessment approach looks beyond a diagnosis. We focus on understanding the whole child and providing meaningful recommendations that support everyday life, school, learning, and overall well-being.
Who can benefit from an Autism Assessment?
An Autism Assessment may be helpful for children and parents who may have questions about their child's development, social experiences, communication style, sensory needs, or daily functioning.
Some individuals pursue an assessment because they have noticed challenges with:
- Social communication
- Understanding social cues or expectations
- Sensory sensitivities or differences
- Emotional regulation and managing change
- Feeling overwhelmed by certain environments
- Navigating school and academic challenges
Can an Autism Assessment also identify ADHD or other mental health concerns?
Autism can sometimes overlap with other neurodevelopmental or mental health experiences, including ADHD, anxiety, or learning differences.
During the assessment process, our clinicians consider the full picture of the child's strengths and challenges. If additional concerns are identified, we can discuss whether further assessment or supports may be beneficial.
What can I expect during the Growing BeWellers- Early Childhood Autism + Cognitive Assessment?
This assessment is typically completed within 6–8 weeks and combines autism-specific testing with a cognitive assessment to better understand your child's strengths and support needs.
Step 1: Intake & Booking
Meet with our Care Team to discuss your concerns, complete required consent forms, and schedule your assessment appointments. We'll help guide you through the process and answer any questions along the way.
Step 2: Parent Clinical Interview (Week 1)
Participate in a one-hour meeting with your psychologist to discuss your child's developmental history, current strengths and concerns, and your goals for the assessment.
Step 3: Assessment & Questionnaires (Weeks 2–3)
Your child will participate in approximately three hours of age-appropriate assessment activities over one to two sessions. Parents and teachers (when applicable) will also complete standardized questionnaires to provide a comprehensive understanding of your child's functioning across settings.
Step 4: Report Preparation (Weeks 3–5)
Your psychologist will carefully review all assessment findings and prepare a comprehensive report outlining results, clinical impressions, and individualized recommendations.
Step 5: Feedback Appointment (Weeks 6–8)
Meet with your psychologist to review the results, discuss recommendations, ask questions, and explore next steps for support.
Does my child need a referral?
No. A physician referral is not required to book an assessment. Families can contact our team directly to schedule a complimentary consultation and discuss their concerns.
What happens during the assessment?
Your child's assessment may include a parent or self-interview, standardized assessment tools, questionnaires, clinical observations, and a feedback session. The specific process will depend on your child's unique needs and the type of assessment recommended.
What will I receive after the assessment?
You will receive a comprehensive written report outlining the assessment findings, your child's strengths, areas of need, and personalized recommendations for home, school, and ongoing support. Your psychologist will also meet with you during a dedicated feedback session to review the results, answer your questions, and discuss next steps.
Can the assessment be shared with my child's school?
Yes. Our reports are designed to support collaboration with schools, physicians, therapists, and other healthcare providers. Findings and recommendations may help guide educational planning, accommodations, and ongoing supports.
Are these assessments covered by insurance?
Many extended health benefit plans provide coverage for psychological assessment services. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to confirm your specific coverage. BeWell provides detailed receipts that can be submitted for reimbursement. Direct billing may be available or partially available for some policies.
My child already has ADHD (or another diagnosis). Can they still have an autism or psychoeducational assessment?
Yes. Many children have multiple areas of strength and challenge that may benefit from further exploration. During your consultation, our team will help determine whether an autism assessment, psychoeducational assessment, or combined assessment is the most appropriate option for your child.
What happens if my child receives a diagnosis?
Our support continues beyond the assessment. Depending on your child's needs, we can provide access to therapy, parent support, medication management, and additional services to help your family understand the diagnosis and move forward with confidence.
My child is very young. Is it too early for an assessment?
Early assessment can help identify developmental differences and connect families with appropriate supports as soon as possible. For children between 2 and 7 years old, our psychologists will first complete a consultation to determine the most appropriate assessment approach based on your child's developmental stage, strengths, and presenting concerns.
What if I'm not sure whether an assessment is the right next step?
That's exactly what the complimentary consultation is for. Our team will answer your questions, learn more about your concerns, and help you determine whether an assessment is appropriate and which option best fits your child's needs.
